935 Identification and Management of Electrolyte Abnormalities in Surgical Patients Requiring Total Parenteral Nutrition: An Audit of Current Practice at A University Hospital

Abstract Aim Electrolyte abnormalities are a common and serious consequence of nutritional deficiencies when patients nil-by-mouth. Timely intervention with multidisciplinary approach is known to improve outcome. This audit aimed assess adequacy initial electrolyte management timing dietetics referral in acute surgical requiring total parenteral nutrition university hospital. Method A retrospective all general surgery referred for between January-December 2019 was performed. The following standards (from the time admission) were applied: monitoring electrolytes every 48-hours, treatment within 24-hours discovery; service 48-hours nil-by-mouth being commenced. Results Data from 52 (27 females, median age 66) analysed. Fifty-one (98%) had measured however magnesium, phosphate and/or calcium not prior input 9 (17%). Forty found 28 (54%), though only 18 (64%) commenced 24-hours. most corrected (50%). 46% after status. Conclusions In our unit, we that basic frequently monitored placed nil-by-mouth, calcium, magnesium often omitted input, correction sometimes delayed. Introduction local protocol-based streamlined referrals likely adherence best practice.
